In recent years, the City of Los Angeles has undertaken transformative restoration projects at both Hollyhock House and Residence A, the Wright-designed guesthouse also in Barnsdall Park. The original school building (above) opened in 1905 and consisted of the consolidated school districts of Hollywood City, Laurel, Coldwater, Lankershim, Los Feliz, Cahuenga, and The Pass. Most of Fort Moore Hill itself was removed in 1949 for the construction of the freeway, which opened in December 1950. The Hall of Records was built in 1906 to relieve overcrowding next door in the county’s red-sandstone courthouse. The new building consolidated most county offices under one lavishly ornamented roof—a showy headpiece that featured finials, pyramidal gables, and copper ribbing. Southern California passes up Northern California in population. Towards the center is the opera house on Main Street at 1st designed by Ezra F. Kysor (architect of the Pico House, Merced Theater, and, it has been said, the remodeled Workman House here at the Homestead) and his partner Octavius Morgan. A smaller tower to the right of the courthouse and above the very white building about dead center is the second Los Angeles High School, atop Fort Moore Hill. Its predecessor was constructed in 1872 and this version opened about two decades later and was used for about a quarter century until 1917. Immediately to the right of that is the tall tower of the county courthouse, which was built in 1889 during the famed boom of the preceding couple of years.

The State Normal School at Los Angeles opened on August 29, 1882, on what is now the site of the Central Library of the Los Angeles Public Library system. South Gate and West Covina are incorporated as cities. One of the largest churches in the nation, it serves as the home of Aimee Semple McPherson, a flamboyant and charismatic faith healer and preacher. McPherson becomes one of the most talked about Los Angeles personalities in the 1920s.
The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The house, which is a National Historic Landmark owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California, is open for public tours.
A large number of African Americans from the south migrate to Los Angeles. The first overhead power lines in Los Angeles are strung by the Bureau of Power and Light. Captain G. Allan Hancock donates Hancock Park, which includes La Brea Tar Pits, to the county. Los Angeles purchases its first fireboat, the Aeolian. The first large structure to the left is one recently discussed in the post about the “quinfecta” of transportation from a 1920s-era photo on Broadway. That building is the Hall of Records, who stood from 1911 to 1973, and which was recently completed when this photo was taken.
The Hotel Sommerville, a popular center for African Americans opened only the year before, is sold to Lucius Lomax Sr. The hotel is renamed Dunbar Hotel to honor poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Ray Pinker joins the LAPD crime lab as the nation's first civilian forensics specialist.
The first motion picture studio west of Chicago is established in Long Beach by the California Motion Picture Manufacturing Company. The photo highlighted here dates from sometime in the 1910s and looks to be from about the southeast corner of Los Angeles and 2nd streets looking towards the northwest. There are some well-known city landmarks in view, especially three in a row at the center and slightly to the left. However, by 1921 Wright had built only the main house and two guest houses.
Otis liked this entrepreneurial young man and hired him as the Times’ general manager. Harry’s first wife, Magdalena Schlador, had died in childbirth in 1892, leaving him with two small daughters, Franciska and Alice May. Fire Escapes date back to the turn of the 20th century, when fire safety became a major concern and building owners were required by law to provide fire escape routes in their new property. The fire escape invention seemed to be a simple and cost-efficient way to address this requirement. In 1917, the school moved to its current location at Country Club Drive (now West Olympic Boulevard), which incidentally is not on a hill. In 1914, the relatively humble building (428 S. Hill Street) was dwarfed by the 11-story Hotel Clark, which rose on the adjacent plot on its north side.
